Lighten up, have whatever kind of celebration you want and let other people do the same. Trust me...the solstice has been celebrated by pretty much all cultures since humans have been able to measure the year. Y'all were not only not the first, you aren't even among the oldest.

A fir branch was used by German husbands to beat their wives with to insure fertility.
So they dressed it up with decorations and made it benign.
