I agree with all the previous comments. I used an "ask the band a question" forum on MySpace a few years back to ask robin why they haven't moved with this song. He mentioned some initial problems with the publishing and that they MAY eventually re-record it for an album. This is my favorite GBs song by far. "I'm watching my friendships and hometown unravel" - WOW - who doesnt know what that feels like. Come on guys, get er' done...
There's no reason they couldn't record it on a future album. A&M doesn't restrict them from performing and recording songs they own. They put out a new live album in 2009 and performed songs from their A&M days. They probably just didn't want to put old songs on the new album, although I wish they would, cause this is a cool song that deserves to be properly released.
@andy3576 You're not wrong. Somewhere on YouTube (unless it got pulled) is an early studio version of this, as well as a demo done by Robin and Doug. That new album could've used it BADLY. Listening to No Chocolate Cake is like reconnecting with an old girlfriend who, try as I might, I can't remember why I fell in love with in the first place.
What the hell is A&M doing with it? I don't understand ownership of songs. This incredible tune is just rotting in a vault when it could be properly recorded on a fantastic new Gin Blossoms record.
Gin Blossom are my favorite band, and 'Biggest Date' is my fave GB's song. Most of their songs that I like are written either by Jesse or Doug, but this one was actually penned up by Robin. Too bad these guys lost the rights to A&M to record it as a new release.

A total masterpiece. Everyone seems to know that except the Gin Blossoms.
