@SteffanLlwyd I don't think Coke is more poisonous than coal. Coke is what was left after the gasworks had extracted all they wanted from coal. I still burn coal on my open fire because I love the look and the smell of it. Also I love annoying the tossers who believe in Global Warming.

I read once that the reason for cab-less locomotives was to avoid gassing the footplate crew during the days of burning coke rather than coal (because coke gasses more than coal). I've never been convinced. But does anyone know either way?

Glad you enjoyed it! Personally I think it was because the men who were on the footplate were successors to the men who drove horse drawn vehicles. They were out in the open, so were the footplate crews. Even early buses had open cabs.
