i guess it's cause you use mostly .avi format which (for me at least) vegas won't import properly.
i rip all my dvds in mpeg(mpeg2) format, and vegas doesn't have problem with that+it keeps the quality the best.
as far as .mkv format,vegas can't read that format.you need to convert it into again mpeg2 format in order to keep the best quality.
&last as for the rendering settings, i render my videos in again mpeg2 format (they are then .m2t when you upload them to youtube).
