This song was written by the American composer and pianist Hoagy Carmichael, who also wrote "Georgia on my Mind". Louis Armstrong recorded this song, and made it famous. This was performed for "Does it Swing?" a show I wrote to introduce 6-12 year olds to swing jazz at the Barbican. Although not specifically a song in the style of swing, it's a beautiful and melancholy love song that I felt these great musicians could make swing. Many jazz musicians covered standard songs and gave them their own flavour.
This is sung by Wycliffe Gordon. In rehearsals, I didn't like his approach to singing this song, but I found this performance breathtaking, and it is now my favourite version, beating even Louis Armstrong. It also features Reginald Thomas on piano, and Alvin Atkinson on drums, Abram Wilson on trumpet, and members of Tomorrow's Warriors.
This is my gals favourite song in the whole wide world :).......what a lovely version!!!
