The Red-bellied black snake is a forest snake that actively hunts its prey. It's often found in wet environments, so its diet includes fish, frogs and lizards. It's venomous, but its lack of aggression means it's considered far less dangerous than the Eastern Brown. Black snakes' venom is low in both potency and output, so it rarely bites to defend itself. Food is scarce in the forest, so precious toxin must be saved for prey whenever possible.

  • I've stepped on one of these, bare foot, I shit myself and did the panic dance, the snake was more scared of me though and took off.

  • Many years ago I came across one of these snakes while riding my horse alongside a gravel road. Top half was glistening black, bottom half brilliant red. It was slithering slowly across road so I got a good estimate of length - 5 to 6 feet.Only thing is I live in W.A. where red bellied black snakes are not found. I could only suggest that it had travelled across to W.A. on an interstate truck up under the chassis or in the container.

  • woke up and found one in my kitchen :(

  • Saw one while working in Bondi Junction :s

  • they also love farmland. found a 5ft long one crossing the road in our local area a few weeks back
