Power Mix Dance Party (1991)

In 1990 and 1991 I worked on a cable television dance party show that promoted Scandals, a nightclub located in Vestal, NY. Talk about lights, camera and action! There were four of us on the crew plus the host and club promoter. We did the show live to tape Saturday nights. It was a ton of fun.

I created this video while testing out a new video editing system I designed and built for my university TV station. The system consisted of two Sony U-matic SP industrial decks (VO-9850 and VO-9800), an United Media Inc. edit controller (UMI-430 if I recall correctly), Amiga 2000 with a Video Toaster (the open and close fly in/out), and a time base correcter I forget the make of (it was not my favorite piece of equipment).

Show graphics and effects were generated live during the taping using one of the guy's Amigas he brought from home. I know he used Deluxe Paint, I don't recall the genlock or software for the posterization effect.

So where was this place? I've never heard of a place called Scandals in Vestal. I'm guessing it no longer exists?

Scandals was the nightclub located above Headlines Restaurant in Vestal. I think the still vacant building was renamed Cheers or something. It is just past the former Vestal Plaza on the hill next to the Residence Inn and WICZ-TV.

the building it was in was torn down quite a few years ago. LOL I used to work at both Headlines and Scandals

Deluxe Paint was just for the renders. The timing was all done with with custom code and keypress events. How did I do all the sweet posterization? If only we had intercoms...
