Hank and Iris bring Tommy home on Christmas Eve, and as they walk in the front door, Tommy exults that he made it home with six hours to go until Christmas, and tells Hank the house looks great. Iris asks Tommy what he thinks of the Christmas tree, and Tommy says it's excellent. Hank says that's a first. Tommy tells Iris that Hank has a rep for picking the scrawniest, lightest tree in the lot. Iris says that's funny, that's what she heard about Tommy. Noticing that the strings of lights are all tangled, Tommy asks what happened. Hank tells him they were testing the bulbs. Tommy innocently says it looks like they got a little distracted. When the doorbell rings, Tommy answers it, and it's Cass and Frankie, who have brought a Christmas present for Tommy: a scrapbook of Dean's convent concert, which Tommy loves and shows off to Iris and Hank. Tommy asks Cass and Frankie to stay and help them get the tree dressed, and Iris agrees that the more, the merrier, so Cass and Frankie agree to stay. Tommy goes to get the ornaments out of the basement, and while he's downstairs, John arrives. He was reviewing Tommy's chart, and he got an update right after Tommy, Hank, and Iris left the hospital. Hank says Tommy's doing better than he has in months. John says that's why he came by: he needs to adjust Tommy's medication. He gives Hank the sheet of paper outlining the changes, and Hank says he'll take care of it. John has a grim prognosis, though. He explains that in many terminal patients, there is often a stage that they go through right before the end, where they have a burst of energy and are in a state of euphoria; all their pain is gone, and they feel normal again. Based on Tommy's history, John thinks it's highly likely that this is what's happening to Tommy now. Frankie says she's so sorry. Hank thanks John for giving it to him straight. Tommy returns with the ornaments, and Cass and Frankie look at them with him. Tommy asks John if John got everyone up to speed on Tommy's condition, and John replies that he's afraid he had to. Tommy tells the group to please try not to be bummed. Hank asks Tommy if Tommy knows why he could be feeling better. Tommy says sure he does, but what can he do except go with it? He feels great now, and that's all he cares about. Then Tommy says they have lots of work to do if they want to be finished before Santa comes, so they'd better get going. Cass, Frankie, Iris, Hank, and Tommy then start trimming the tree. Thanks to Janie for the scenes.
Tommy is the coolest....he wants to live life while he has the chance!!
