  • To answer the question below:

    Headsail was shredded in storm, and to keep it from tangling up in the rest of the rig we need to have bow pointed off the wind. The sea anchor balanced nice against the storm jib from amidships.

    If we had no problems with the headsail, I would of hove to straight or drop sails completely and deploy sea anchor from bow.

    The bottom line was we needed to keep torn headsail from the rest of the rig.

  • Wow, much bigger waves than we sail here on Rainy Lake! Read about the storm in Cruising World...RIP Jan Anderson from triple Stars. Unexpected tragedies happen so fast on water. I was piloting a small dingy sailboat in 2010 in a confused sea with main and jib pulling different directions and suddenly went down stern first in about 2 seconds.     Question from a calm seas sailor: Why are they using the sea anchor (1:00) at the same time of the storm jib (in a hove-to position), and out from the middle instead of from the bow (without the jib)?
