Im confused as to why he raised Alex as his own even though her mother was there on the island looking for her , and as great as his love for the island was how could he let Alex die?

Michael Emerson is probly the greatest actor alive. He plays Benjamin so well, LOST did a good job on showing the sweeter side of Ben too aswell as his devious side. Nothings ever quite worked out for him, he was blamed for his own mothers death, a alcoholic and abusive father and The only loves he ever had didn't go very well. The man even had to sacrafice his daughter who he raised as his own and cherished to save that island.

Oh, I think she loved Ben. Her attitude was just a mixture of typical teen angst and her realization that her dad is probably not a very good person. But the basic, innate love wasn't gone.
