Hearing him actually speak strikes a contrast to his densely worded and free flowing writing style.
The man had a wonderful command of the English language, and of a wit born of extraordinary education as well.Still - his voice throws me off...even tho I'm glad glad to actually hear it tho!
Thanks for the post.

Mencken, one of the great satirists of the world. Some of what he wrote is right up there with Juvenal's "Satires", and Clemens' "The mysterious Stanger", "Letters from the Earth", and of course "What is man ?". Thanks Mencken !

This series was hugely enjoyable, one of the best things I have found on YouTube. I discovered the sage some 25 years ago and have read much by him and about him since. It has been an enormous treat to listen to him, and, yes, he sounds exactly as I imagined he would. Thank you for this.

Thanks a lot for making this!
You did the American public a service. It is refreshing to hear a media legend berate the government's PR agents of the time.

A wonderful experience! We're fortunate that Mencken made this recording when he did, because he suffered a stroke a few months later that essentially destroyed his ability to use words. He spent over seven years in this condition -- a living hell for anyone, but especially for someone with such verbal gusto. I wish Mencken were around today; the few Menckenesque social critics we have in our time tend to be insufferably snarky and shallow.
