I had to watch the video twice: on the first play-through I couldn't pay attention to the message of the thing, as I was distracted by Mr Fry's soothing tones.

Permaculture GOOD news and should be shown on TV twice weekly. Stephen 's voice is persuading AND gentle. You can't help but take notice. I remember learning during geography, way back in Secondary school
[1960] that rain forests made clouds. I know many people that don't know this and who also poo-poo any idea that humankind has anything at al to do with our predicament! ! If only the scientists had had more foresight!!! Maybe we have time.Lets pursue, we have the grandchildren to think of!

The video mentions a project that was done in SE asia. Where can I find more about that? From general information to the specifics, who was involved, how to replicate it. I know about permaculture in general, and also about forest gardening, but this specific project is new to me.

@alspyjamas Permaculture designs always includes systemic thinking starting with herbaceous species pioneers (usually nitrogen fixers) at the beginning of any food forest system. Simple observation will also make things clear if the normal evolution of the regions typical systems does lead to a forest. If not, a system can be designed, using shrubs or any other plants similar to that present in the region we are designing for. The idea is basically to rehabilitate the system.

How could anyone vote this down? How sad that so much of humanity, especially the USA, actually worship death and long for the misery and destruction of humanity.

Fair share . . . reciprocity with the earth . . . the future is vegan . . .
A great video, simply done and a powerful message. However lets not forget that trees are only one plant species that are useful, grasses sequester more carbon in the short term and are the natural input for many mammals. Don't discard the humble grass, not all parts of our planet need to be forests!

Indeed Grasses Sequester Carbon short term and they do not however increase cloud formation nor do they adequately stabilise deforested land or prevent desertification sufficiently. In any case we are talking about reforesting land that used to be forest so natural grasslands should be unaffected.

I've been saying this for years... isn't it blatently obvious this needs doing. I ain't a friend of the earth or ought but rather than trying to stop the inevitable (because that's what it is), why not modify plants to grow in harsher environments and replace the shit load of trees we cut down... problem solved.....

Permaculture works without even having to modify the plants you just need to apply some carful ethical design. :-)

More adverts need the delectable voice of Stephen Fry in them.

He really is amazing he nuanced everything in super quick time.
A few run throughs and then he nailed it in one continuous take.
