Vehicles ASCENDING always have right of way. It warrants a couple of lines in the small print at the back of the highway code these days but when I was learning to drive (in the hilly north) it was something the instructor always taught you - simply because a vehicle ascending might not get going again if it has to stop. As for the descent being difficult, you simply select lowest gear and let the engine do all the braking for you. Some cars manage 2nd gear, others need 1st
no simon..its acsending coz if you stop on that gradient you could burn your clutch out tryin to get goin again...i went over the pass in my transit last week....do not envy me...i was bricking it !.
Eh do you not mean decending vehicles to have the right of way? its much harder (on a bike anyway) to decend rather than ascend. That I would know from several thousand miles of driving through austria, germany, leictenstein and switzerland including the san barnando pass. I love asending but you've got other factors including fear as you decend.
this summer 8 huge winibago wally wagons drove past that road sign and got stuck on the first bend. It took them nearly an hour to revers back, drive into the field to turn around and bumble off back to the main road near Muncaster.
TOurists! dont you just love 'em.
May I add it is usual to let ascending vehicles have right of way.
