If you will track down the old appalachian songs (before Tight-ass Bill Monroe cleaned it up and called it Bluegrass) there is almost always a threat or actual death/murder. Often a girl "in trouble" whose lover can not marry her and pushes her in the river, or somethinjg. Lot's of American music is violent. We are and have always been a violent society.
