The Philadelphia Orchestra is noted for maintaining the same sound for decades. This video is a documentary of that fact. The credit seem to go mostly to Eugene Ormandy. Noteworthy, the Vienna Philharmonic has a sound that does not change because the orchestra has supplied all the instruments, same instruments, for over 100 years. Many of the instruments in the Philadelphia Orchestra are supplied by the orchestra. I am trying to find out to what extent.

  • as a kid i loved the romantic exuberance and splendor of the philadelphia orchestra's sound under ormandy's direction - and i loved. loved, loved his tempos in every piece he conducted or recorded - i later heard many of the musicians hated him, but i guess that wasn't so unusual for a conductor to be hated back in those days

  • Rachmaninoff Symphony #2 extract around 13:10 was the theme for the Shirley Temple Theater TV show. :)

This is great! Cheers to Alan for posting this. Classical music forever!

    I am so proud.

  • I really enjoyed this. Thanks for posting.

  • @Maazel456 . I grew up in Chicago with the sound of the CSO in my ears. I moved to Philly to absorb that Philly Orchstra sound. Both are great, but so veri different from each other.

  • Thank you so much for this. I'm learning more about the Philadelphia Sound - my mother and I saw Eugene Ormandy at Robin Hood Dell in the early 70's I believe, with Ertha Kitt as the guest artist - I will never forget this. It is also so fabulous that we hear Blythe Danner as narrator in parts of this film. She is a part of Philadelphia, and don't we love it.

  • also around 40 minutes! i just finished a camp where biava was the conductor!
