Although this song is an Eddie & The Hot Rods original, first recorded on their 2nd album, "Life On The Line"(1977), many people are familiar with other versions, since so many bands have covered this classic, especially Punk/Oi/Hardcore bands. In fact, some of those cover versions may even surpass the actual Eddie & The Hot Rods studio version. But, if you really want to know what all of the fuss is about(especially if you've only heard E&THRod's studio version, which is so-so for sure) when it comes the the brilliant, pre-Punk, Pub Rock band, Eddie & The Hot Rods, and this song in particular, then listen to this live version from The Rainbow in London. This is the quintessential version of this song and easily surpasses any other version, live or studio, by any other band. This version let's you hear it in all it's glory as one of the greatest youth anthems of all time. No wonder such a wide range of bands have covered it, particularly /Oi/Streetpunk bands. And the studio version reached #9 in the UK singles charts. So, since no one put it up on here, I finally decided to put it up from my own copy of the 1977 7" vinyl single(the A Side being, "Life On The Line," also the name of the full length 1977 album that "Do Anything You Wanna Do" appeared on). And of course, you have the amazing Paul Gray on bass before he went on to join The Damned(for "The Black Album" and "Strawberries"). Although the lyrics are pretty easy to hear in this version, I'm going to include them hear anyway. Enjoy!

"I'm gonna break out of the city
Leave the people here behind
Searching for adventure
It's the kind of life to find
Tired of doing day jobs
With no thanks for what I do
I know I must be someone
Now I'm gonna find out who

Why don't you ask them what they expect from you ?
Why don't you tell them what you're gonna do
You get so lonely, maybe it's better that way
It ain't you only, you got something to say
Do anything you wanna do
Do anything you wanna do

I don't need no politicians to tell me things I shouldn't be
Neither no opticians to tell me what I oughta see
No-one tells you nothing even when you know they know
They tell you what you should be
They don't like to see you grow

Why don't you ask them what they expect from you ?
Why don't you tell them what you're gonna do
You get so lonely, maybe it's better that way
It ain't you only, you got something to say
Do anything you wanna do
Do anything you wanna do

I'm gonna break out of the city
Leave the people here behind
Searching for adventure
It's the kind of life to find
Tired of doing day jobs
With no thanks for what I do
I know I must be someone
Now I'm gonna find out who

Why don't you ask them what they expect from you ?
Why don't you tell them what you're gonna do
You get so lonely, maybe it's better that way
It'ain't you only, you got something to say
Do anything you wanna do
Do anything you wanna do
Do anything you wanna do!"
