Here we have a commercial. Very interesting, a Youth Military Group. Asking us to give a year of service. Interesting. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

City Year was founded on the belief that young people can change the world. City Years vision is that one day a year of service will become an opportunity for and common expectation of every young person. City Year supports this vision in four primary ways:

Full-Time Youth Service Corps
City Years signature program, the City Year youth service corps each year unites more than 1,400 young people age 17-24 for a demanding year of full-time community service, leadership development, and civic engagement. These young leaders come from diverse backgrounds and put their idealism to work by tutoring and mentoring school children, reclaiming public spaces, and organizing after-school programs, school vacation camps, and the Starfish Corps, Young Heroes, and City Heroes programs.

Inspiring Citizen Service Through High-Impact Community Events
City Year seeks to be a catalyst a mechanism to engage people and institutions in the citizen service movement. Events such as city-wide service days and Martin Luther King Jr. Service Day bring together thousands of people from throughout City Year communities each year to complete critical projects. These projects revitalize communities, and foster a spirit of civic engagement by and bringing together community members from all walks of life.

Leading Discussion and Development of National Service Policies and Initiatives
City Years vision is pursued not only through action, but also through public policy outreach and international initiatives promoting the concept of citizen service, engaging policymakers, providing leadership to Voices for National Service, and securing support for AmeriCorps. By generating new, innovative policy ideas and leading discussion around these ideas, City Year seeks to build awareness and support for citizen service among leaders and key stakeholders across the country and the world.

Expanding Service Opportunities Around the World
City Year aims to inspire and support citizen service across the globe to unite people from all races, religions, cultures and ethnicities in building a more just world.

In 2005, City Year launched its first international site, City Year South Africa. Located in Johannesburg, 200 corps members serve in 18 primary schools through after-school programs in literacy, life skills and tutoring, as well as service projects to reclaim and brighten school spaces. In addition to serving the Johannesburg community through high-quality service-based community projects and after-school programs, City Year South Africa has also helped its City Year corps members realize a brighter future through excellent placement rates in professional employment, apprenticeships, and universities.

I don't believe this is a millitary group at all, but could easily be brainwashed & armed with all of this, jump on the CHANGE propaganda bandwagon for the president. The fear is Obama would use them to disarm civilian disidents. What is with all this collectivism? America is made up of FREE INDIVIDUALS.

  • Wow, just when you thought the Nazis were gone..... They are back ....

  • @sXePro - No, most people just think you're a schmuck who is easily manipulated without a mind of your own. It is not you that people fear. It is a massive collection of useful idiots that presents the danger. Isn't that why you joined? Because you cannot handle your own individuality and needed a group to validate you and make you feel more powerful.

  • @airmattress1 - Perhaps you should read your history before you tell other people to read the facts. This is not a new tactic of despots. You can find this sort of thing at work in N. Korea, the former Soviet Union, and under Germany's brief stint with National Socialism. Youth indoctrination is a tool of tyrants. Why don't you try doing your own research. You are like the pot calling the kettle black. It's time for your deprogramming.

  • Watch "Just Say No to the New Hitler Youth." It demonstrates yet another way in which our children are being indoctrinated and how parents should respond to this kind of nonsense.

  • When close-minded, paranoid people see a commercial with teenagers in khakis doing jumping jacks in unison, followed by a girl saying "I am change", it gets translated as a militant youth corps for Obama. I highly disapprove of the Obama Administration, but the comparison between City Year and the Hitler Youth is abhorrent ignorance at its worst. City Year has been around 20 years before Obama was even elected, and there is nothing politically indoctrinating or militant about the organization.

  • I knew many of my students parents personally and they were EXTREMELY supportive. Again, thinking before you speak, and researching FACTS not OPINIONS is something each person with a negative comment should learn.

  • @pikaparka1: No one assumes that the parents don't teach their kids, the students in our classes have the lowest score on their literacy tests. And if someone is willing to dedicate their time for no cost to the parents or schools to give a little extra help to a student who may need it why is that a bad thing? We ENCOURAGE kids spending time with their parents, many of their parents hold several jobs and simply do not have the time and we help fill the gap.

  • I AM SOCIALISM!

  • city year has been around for a long time, this is not what the title says. i do agree that the give act or whatever is on some other shit and that it is totally wrong

  • @carsonwright7 go eat crap
