Taken from several different videos featuring some of the world's leading popularisers of science, I have sought to combine several examples of how science is quite the opposite of hubristic and that in actuality, a reasonable scientific understanding can be incredibly humbling, uplifting, and indeed can act as a model for respectable behaviour through thoughtful, concerted decision-making. Thus, the scientific example is well-worth emulating and appreciating fully. Featuring Jacob Bronowski, Richard Dawkins, Steven Weinberg, Jacque Fresco, Neil DeGrasse Tyson, and Carl Sagan.

A very special Thank You must go to YouTube User 'XXXSDESDEXXX' whose video is the perfect marriage of Carl Sagan's haunting voice (speaking 'cosmic poetry' from the audio version of his excellent book 'Pale Blue Dot'), sublime music (from the Cosmos TV series, composer: Vangelis) and poignant images which were edited marvellously so as to create the brilliant video which is featured (partially) at the end here, and for which I can take no credit. Unfortunately, due to YouTube's insane rule of 10 minutes maximum length per video, I had to brutally edit the clip, and the butchered result is quite choppy and does no justice to the full video. Please follow the link below to see the complete version in its splendid entirety.

  • Great Video man :) that sums it up :)

  • @genghisshmenghis The first speaker is Jacob Bronowski, a very cool physicist and biologist. And the (awesome) documentary is called "The Ascent of Man". There's also a link to watch it in the infobox. Enjoy ;-)

  • why would you cut off carl sagan

  • It was cool to see Jacque Fresco in here. But I was already convinced that I should share this by the time I finished watching the Steven Weinberg clip. Excellent stuff.

  • Who was the first speaker and what is the name of the program he was speaking in?

  • Beautiful

  • Yup. Thanks for the video!

  • Have you seen our semi-official Pale Blue Dot video? It was the #1 rated PBD video until some right-wing pro-Bush votebotting took us down.

The complete Weinberg lecture. Just remove the brackets.
