Echidna in my backyard

This Echidna walked past my back door, it was not at all concerned by my presence. It just ignored me and ate some ants nesting between the pavers. I am always glad to see native fauna.

Echidnas are one of two living families of monotremes (egg laying mammals). The monotremes separated from the other mammalian evolution lines about 150 million years ago.

They don't attack anything except ants and termites. The spines are for defence and if they feel threatened they will curl up into a ball of spikes.

The fences in my area are made with a mesh big enough for an echidna to just squeeze through, an echidna is able to walk from one backyard to another.

@Icewind007 Yes you must, you'll hurt your hand. The things's as picky as a porcupine, except that the spines don't stick in your hand.
