I believe fully appreciating the effects of binaural beats and other forms of brainwave entrainment is a skill which needs to be learnt. But I also believe that once you have learnt, brainwave entrainment can be suprisingly effective and powerful. I've just started conducting a study on brainwave entrainment using music and sound... It really is fascinating!!
This internal synchronised impulse is powerful enough that it is capable of influencing the dominant brainwave frequency that your brain will operate at, especially if the subject is able to detach him or herself from distractions and other external influences.
The beats that are perceived are due to our brain interpreting the difference in frequency between the carrier tones, and the ability that our brains posess to interpret these beats results in the superior olivary nucleus generating electrical impulses of the beat frequency which resonate throughout the brain.
The binaural beat phenomenon is a reuslt of processing within the brain in the superior olivary nucleus, which is part of the brain stem and is responsible for much of the auditary processing which we do in our brains.
To elaborate a little bit... Binaural beats are particularly effective because the actual tone that is perceived as a result of the 2 carrier tones presented to each ear, is generated within the brain. It's much like audio phasing but in this case it's not actually sonically phasing because the tones are not occupying the same physical airspace.
is it totally sade to listen to these? no side effects or addiction or anything?
