Tabla Master Pradip Ghosh - Disciple of Pt. Kumar Bose, Benaras Gharana - Tabla Lesson - Bhajani Theka (8 Beat Cycle used for Bhajans, a type of devotional or 'light-classical' music)

NOTE: The astounding bass in these (and other) tabla videos from the bayan (left hand drum) cannot be reproduced by laptop speakers, or built-in monitor speakers. Much of the beauty and soul of tabla will not be heard. Use of decent external speakers or simply listening through headphones is HIGHLY recommended.

Pradip is a renowned Tabla player and has accompanied many artists and musicians of national repute.

Pradip is a disciple of Pandit Kumar Bose and has a degree of Sangeet Prabhakar (wh ich is similar to having a doctorate degree) in tabla. Pradipji also teaches tabla and has students spread out throughout the world.

Pradipji has learned material from all gharanas of tabla playing, but specializes in the Benaras Gharana, for which style his Guru is generally recognized as being one of the foremost living authorities. This style is characterized by including many 'pakhawaj bols', or sounds from the barell-drum precursor to the tabla. These 'bols' (or sounds / drum words) include very powerful strokes, a 'full-hand tirakita', and open hand slaps, all at tremendously high speeds. His repertoire also include a full range of more subtle and delicate techniques from this and other gharanas.

  • You introduced yourself as a humble learner but actually you are a gifted Player and can be a good teacher too. Soon several concerts are on their way. My congrats!

  • There is some confusion. In the video is my Guru Pradipji, who is a gifted player and teacher. He is a professional musician.

I on the other hand, am Pradipji's student, a mere beginner. I am the one who is RECORDING the video, not the person in it. But hopefully with lots of instruction and riyaz, my playing will improve.

  • i love you man....i felt my heart and spirit get so happy and uplifted after watching you and listening to you play...kya baat hai ji..wah..

  • the tabla really speaks here!! kudos :)

  • Thanks for bols given. Bless you.

  • to SirZM. Please consider that people are constantly asking about ALL the bols in ALL these videos. This video is simply supposed to be a sample of a lesson sitting with my Guruji. Bhajani theka bols are all over the internet, one simply has to look.

As I have commented elsewhere, I firmly believe tabla is an art that should and must be learned in person from a Guru. Writing bols out is not sufficient.

If anyone wants actual lessons, they may contact me for Pradipji's contact info.

  • Thank you Balraj. Please note that for us westerners, it's hard to make heads or tails of anything without notating rests. Please see the transcription above, which may not be necessary for seasoned tabla players, but helps us beginners, in my opinion.

  • Bhajani theka is as follows:

Dhin - Na Dhin - Dhin Na -

Tin - Na Tin - Tin Na -

This is the basic theka. There are several variations for this, including this one:

Dhin Dhin Na Dhin - Dhin Na TRKT

Tin Tin Na Dhin - Dhin Na TRKT

Where TRKT takes up one beat, and - is a rest of one beat. My humble apologies for the delay. I thought I posted a comment with these bols some time ago.

  • @gampolaya

It has been 7 months (as of today) and he hasn't given you the Bols or responded to your comment !! I suggest you look for help where people are willing to share their knowledge.

  • Bols for bhajan theka

    Dhin Na Dhin Dhin Na

    Tin Na Tin Tin Na

    other varations for bhajan theka

Dhin Na Dhin Dhin Na Tite
