The Taft boys basketball team beat Loyola, 66-65, in the first round of the Southern California regional tournament of the CIF state Division I championships. Taft, the fourth-seeded team in the region, will be at home against Leuzinger in the second round on Thursday.
Leuzinger beat Washington Prep, 91-72, in the first round of the Southern California regionals.
Mater Dei, the top-seeded team in the Southern California bracket, beat Buchanan, 90-65, in the first round.
Westchester, the No. 2 seed, beat Colony, 77-42, in the first round.
Etiwanda, the No. 3 seed, beat El Camino of Oceanside, 67-58, in the first round.
