Alakh Asthana of eClerx Services asks Verna Allee about a common problem faced by many organizations - information overflow and mapping knowledge. Verna explains that the traditional methods of mapping knowledge in the form of databases and buckets of repositories has evolved, and is now focused around competencies, knowledge, and skills.
This organizational knowledge is being organized by 'softer' forms like communities of practice, online conversations and so on. Verna advises that a KM practitioner should avoid an over-structured approach and try to keep it simple. She adds that the need for elaborate maps is now being replaced with effective search engines that empower people to look for what they want.
