I'm horribly disappointed with my HP laptop purchase. I've had to send it back 3 times due to overheating (92 Celsius!) and now screen flickering. Note the "white-outs" from the lower left corner at 10" and 31". These often cause the entire screen to bleach white.

How could a company design a laptop where the fans are exactly where a leg can cover them?

  • I actually bought a Pavilion dv4z along with this computer. The dvZ4 is now running hot too and is out of warranty. You don't have look too hard to see so many people with the same problems. These computers seem to be designed to last about 1.1 years, or just long enough to make it to the warranty expiration date. Never let a friend buy a low end HP.

  • I have HP DV5Z, I have battery removed and work directly with AC power but its not battery causin over heating its CPU heatsink. It make noise constantly without any applications running, over heats and shuts down system. I can actually fry eggs on my laptop. I asked HP for help but they dont do anything. They are actually getting a lot of money from corporate deals, they dont care about individuals. I was a big fan of HP. But not anymoe. This is my 2nd HP laptop both have same problems.

  • Just after buying this HP it ran wicked hot (90C). They *fixed* it - but I had to send it in again for the same problem. The second time they really fixed it and now it runs around 50-60C. Still hot in my opinion. There is a really poor cooling design on this laptop - the fan intake is exactly where my left leg covers it up causing it to run hot. Install SpeedFan, get a temp reading, call HP and INSIST they fix it.

  • so what was the exact finding? it happened to me within the first year of my hp compaq laptop then i sent it to HP, problem was motherboard. after two years (now) screen is flickering more crazy and i have to close and open and lcd, just like open and closing a lid of a chestbox....

  • HP fixed it but they don't tell you what they had to do. You just send it away and it comes back fixed (sometimes). I sent mine back 3 times in the first year of owning it (under warranty). Twice was for overheating and the third was for the screen flickering.

  • Yeah, loose cables seem to be have been the problem. I had HP fix it since it was under warranty. Overall I'm not happy with this computer. My next gripe is the super bright LED lights that light up my bedroom at night.. But it wasn't all that expensive..

  • This ran so hot burned my boys leg he had red mark there but thankfully its healed up , and the screen is now flickering and of course warranty is gone but it also had to go back about overheating couple times.

  • @krisdb2009 ummm well i DONT put my on my lap and it still overheats...... so i dont think thats the problem....

  • @ekulrialb umm u know you arent supost to put the computer on ur lap, its a NOTEBOOK not a LAPTOP,

    THE DV SERRIES ARE NOTEBOOKS

The difference is notebooks are ment to be portably but only ment to be on a TABLE; why dont u read your MANUAL

  • Faulty graphics card.

  • @smartbamboo Same here, i had to get 3 new laptops because it had so many problem that HP wouldn't help with!!!!!!!

  • This is the only reason I hate my computer and I want a MacBook/refund or something!

  • pls visit the web "insidemylaptop." and search key word "How to take apart HP Pavilion dv5 laptop". it will show you all steps as mentioned in my previous comments.
