I am the biggest Diet Coke lover in the world. Coke light is downright AWFUL. Put about half a ton of sweet n low in your Diet Coke and taa-daa, its Coke Light.

"Light" meaning "sugarless" might involve making someone lose weight, that must be how they came up with adding "light" to a beverage name when it has an artificial sweetener rather than sugar. "Diet" probably means for someone on a particular diet, and that has the same concept.
