Not many synths have a mod sequencer like the Korg MS-2000 (demonstrated in Episode 1). But that doesn't mean you can't use LFOs to trigger drumbeats and melodies.

This video features an ESQ-1. While it has a sequencer, it doesn't have an arpeggiator, or any decent internal drum sounds, and certainly no way to key-trigger those sequences. This tutorial will show how to get decent drums and even simulate an arpeggiator, all dynamically triggered via the keyboard.

Plus, the techniques are relevant to almost any synthesizer.

  • u are awesome dude

  • So..... when is the book coming out? You should do one. I'd buy it for sure.

  • I love it how he speaks in the most refined, upper class form of English and then he says "like this piece of shit". Brilliant!

  • Amazing tutorial; thanks for sharing!

  • Perfect!!Nice VNV song at the end.R u a fan of industrial??

    Grt vids!!!

  • Thank you Mr Sulu.

  • i appreciate you took the time to feed the audio directly into the computer vs. a microphone. As you say, the ESQ is truly under rated... or under-discovered. I uncovered all the little treasures and nuances of the ESQ years ago, and it's refreshing to see someone reveal the old tricks to the new generation. I would like to see more videos on the ESQ details of osc. selection, routing options, the lesser known PWM-emulated sync trick... audio panning, etc... Thanks for the memories!

  • Although this video is intended for use with real synths, it opens a whole range of possibilities with analog modeled vst-synths too.

I'm having a go at the vst-version of the Korg MS20 and polysix as well as an FM synth i recently discovered.

It's been a while but i hope you will post more interesting videos.

They're much better than most and give great insight into the possibilities of synthesis.

Thank you very much William, and happy new year to you too!

    Cheers!

  • I am amazed.. I think i'm going to have to play with my ESQ-1 properly next week :D
