  • Awesome player; he'll be missed. I discovered him via the wonderful Mosaic Box of the Pacific Jazz Studio Recordings. I can't reccomend those old recordings enough (Slippery When Wet...)

  • My god. You-Tube comments are SO stupid!!

The sound is bad because it was recorded and processed bad.

Bud had 5 Balanced Action Selmers. He liked them all and just chose one for a gig. That's what he told me in 2003. He is playing an alto sax in this video.

  • r.i.p.

  • is that a stritch? it sure doesn't sound like it looks (an alto). I could be wrong.

nice footage and sound. thank you

  • instant fan!

  • Yes, I was wondering about the snake-charmer sound - more appropriate to the soprano sax (which I don't like). I think he has probably the nicest sound there is on flute (doesn't play it anymore), and a lovely sound on sax earlier on.

  • Bus Shank had the most beautiful tone back in the 50s and 60s. Then, starting in the mid-70s, Art Pepper started sqauking and shrieking, so, of course Bud Shank had to start squeeking and shreiking, too. Goodbye, beuatiful sound. What a drag!

  • Yeah he's awesome! I wish there was more in this video. I got to see him live in San Jose once. He knocked over a mic stand because it was too loud, or whatever. He seemed like a nasty guy, but he played great.

  • Bud Shank remains a master musician!
