@NadrianATRS Thhis was during a period of time when work was hard to come by. ONE of the ways he avoided people wondering too much was he would have a crew of guys do some work, and then, for whatever reason he could think of, he would fire them all. Then hire a new crew to finish whatever he asked them to finish. Also, i believe i remember reading he knew how to build things himself. But the hiring and firing of a lot of people often is one of the ways. And people did know it was weird inside.

I heard about him and this on Coast to Coast and it was unbeleivable like an awful horror movie ,especially the murder castle with all the trap doors, chutes and a buried tank etc.. and that it took place at the end of the 1800's.
