Adding a modern twist to the two-harmonica concept, Adam Gussow and Brandon Bailey toss in some foot-drums (Gussow) and an octave pedal (Bailey). Gussow sings "Take You Downtown"--an adaptation of Muddy Waters's "Goin' to Main Street--while Bailey blows walking bass. Then the two harpists kick out Gussow's instrumental adaptation of Stevie Wonder's "Superstition."

Gussow and Bailey, along with a host of other top blues harmonica players, will be teaching and performing at Hill Country Harmonica THIS WEEKEND (May 22-23, 2010). The event, which takes place at Foxfire Ranch in Waterford, MS, just south of Memphis, has registrants from 30 states and 6 foreign countries.

  • Are you playing superstition on an Ab?

  • @guitarplayer222333: Absolutely! It's an unusual key for blues harp players, but Stevie plays the song in that key and so I kept it there. Because the harp is mostly working the bottom three holes, it gives a meaty sound.

  • It is hard task to accept Adam singin'. But may be one day we will get used to it. Adam bravo!

  • @kiciekoutsider: To paraphrase an old saying: When I'm good, I'm very very good, but when I'm bad, I'm horrid. In this case, I'm not being helped by the sound of my vocals through the mic. The sound guy told me during sound check that it sounded great. He was wrong.

  • The effect that Brandon Bailey is using sounds freaking amazing. It sounds like an electric piano, but it's a harmonica. And one know what it is?

  • @Hambycomb: Some kind of octave pedal.
