Take-offs and landings in a Zenith CH701 at a grass strip in Florida

The landings are consistently 300-400 feet, over a 5 foot fence. Landing roll is about 100 feet. Take-off roll is also about 100 feet with one person and full fuel.

That's amazing performance!

The flaps ARE useful for obtaining a more nose-down attitude during steep approaches, BUT, again, they cause nose-down pitch, so you have to add more power during the flare than you would without flaps.

I've found that flaps make very little difference in terms of best climb speed, and other V speeds.

Specifically for take off, using flaps seems to increase the take off run, slightly. Maybe because with the 701, rotation speed is so low, that the additional nose down pitch you get (with any plane) from using flaps, actually delays the nose coming up, increasing the take off run. It's just my theory!
