The medical community has a lot it could learn from midwifery. My best friend had an OB with her first and a midwife for her second, both at the hospital. Her experiences could not have been more different. Not only did she feel safe and supported and never scared with a midwife, but without even meaning to she delivered her baby without any pain killers. She knew with an epidural she would be stuck in bed, and she enjoyed being able to move around even though it still hurt, it wasn't as bad.
Support Ron Paul's campaign for liberty unity platform, now supported by Ralph Nader, Cynthia McKinney and Constitutionalist pastor Chuck Baldwin. We will win this and alot more when we fight to establish the underlying principle that we are free people and the state is here to serve us, not tell us how to live our lives.
Its an interesting question why the folks supposedly supporting "a woman's right to control her own body"--don't think the freedom of a woman to choose who is present at her birth(s) is as important as a woman's right to terminate pregnancies.
Freedom of choice between folks with 7 years of medical indoctrination is no freedom of choice at all.
It all comes back to thinking that birth is a medical event and that only medical training is sufficient to "save" the baby and mother. Funny how research shows that medical intervention can many times lead to complications. Free the midwives!
Just because a midwife doesn't have a nursing degree doesn't mean that they don't have training. It took me 4 years to get my SC midwife license, and most midwives spend about that much time getting the national CPM title also.
THis midwife is a true hero. Not just being willing to risk prison time to serve mothers and babies, but willing to speak to the media takes courage. Senator Loudon is a great champion of midwives and families. The doctor says it all: go to schoo and do it the right way. What he doesn't know is that CPM's are doing it the right way--fully supported by the science.
