@AmericanCWOVI I believe you're correct. I couldn't recall exactly where he lost his life. Sad to have survived the hard times in Australia, The Civil War and lose his lfe in a river. He was a patriot's patriot.

Yes, these days Van Diemen’s Land is called Tasmania. It was ‘discovered’ by a Dutchman, which is how it came by the first name – Van Diemen’s Land. The name was changed to try and shake the reputation the place had as a convict colony.

I think Abel Tasman is the one who discovered the place, and gave this island its name.

Francis Thomas Mahr was to Van Diemen's Land by the British, he later escaped to the United states where he became popular in Fenian politics and commanded the Irish Brigade in the US Civil War.
