PPSMI: What the student say

In 2001, the Federal government changed the medium of instruction for Mathematics and Science to English, prompting an outcry from vernacular educationist groups.

Currently, the Education Ministry is studying the feasibility of maintaining the policy or switching the language of instruction for these two subjects back to Bahasa Malaysia or in the case of vernacular schools, back to their respective languages.
Malaysiakini spoke to students of SM Bukit Bandaraya in Bangsar to get their views on the teaching of Maths and Science in English after 6 years of implementation.

sains dan matematik itu mata pelajaran teknikal, bukan mata pelajaran bahasa. penggunaan perkataan dalam mata pelajran sains dan matematik terhad berbanding dengan mata pelajaran bahasa.

Jadi, kalau nak pandai bahasa inggeris, kena lebih usaha dalam mata pelajaran bahasa inggeris tu sendiri, bukan dengan guna bahasa inggeris dalam mata pelajaran lain.

@suasanasunyi itu kan salah satu inisiatif jgk utk pandai bahasa Inggeris, menggunakan bahasa tersebut dlm hal y lain... percaya la, kalau setakat baca n belek kamus, xkan pandai English...

speak the language, use it more, then you'll get the language...

well, kalaw betul maths n science tu mata pelajaran teknikal, belajar dlm bahasa apa pun no hal la kan? tahu nombor n formula cukup la... xde masalah la kalaw belajar dlm bm tak pun bi.... ^^

@onlinetubes org dr negara lain berlumba2 nak belajar banyak bahasa, termasuk bahasa Melayu... sebab apa? mereka percaya y bahasa2 y mereka pelajari tu akan bantu utk masa depan... dari segi pelajaran, ekonomi, sosial n mcm2 lagi...

contoh paling mudah, melancong... kita sibuk nak pergi UK la, Us la, tp kalau tak pandai berkomunikasi dlm bahasa Inggeris, sesat sorang2 awak nant...

i am a student in UK... believe me, I really feel grateful for learning English now... it helps me a lot!

@onlinetubes isu penjajah tu da lepas berpuluh2 tahun, tp masih nak ungkit... sekarang mungkin kutuk bila org suruh belajar bahasa Inggeris, tp sedarlah, bahasa Inggeris tu penting... bukan sbb bahasa penjajah ke apa ke...

awak sibuk ckp buat apa nk ckp bahasa Inggeris sedangkan y maths n sains tu bukan org Inggeris y cipta kan? kalaw macam tu, awak boleh cakap bahasa arab? nampak x?

believe me... English is very important... just the same as our Bahasa Melayu...

what kind of education system is this? goes backwards instead of forward just to accommodate the 'supreme' Malays as usual. No offence to the bright Malays though...Nor Atikah at 4:00, that's the futuristic Malay. Those talking before her before her, dumb ones. I pity Nor Atikah because she will be sacrificed to accomodate the stupid fellas before her.
