Gibson SG Classic w/P-90 pickups. Both volume knobs on the Guitar are on 10. Tone knobs are on 8.

1980 Fender Silverface Princeton Reverb Amp. Caps have been replaced. Speaker has been replaced with an Eminence Ragin' Cajun. Tubes are original "Made in USA".

Made this demo to demonstrate the overdriven sound of the amp. For a clean sound, or to hear what the reverb and Vibrato sound like, look at my other video where I'm using a Gibson Melody Maker (You can't really get an overdriven sound with the Melody Maker).

This is an early 1980 model; they switched back to blackface in late 1980. It has the Volume "Boost" knob which most people says brings down the value of the amp dramatically. I personally like the Boost, because it gives the amp a totally different sound, and when it is not engaged, the wiring is the same as the 1960's Blackface, except for a couple of resistors on either side of the power tubes. Amp is still point to point wiring, which they did not change until it was discontinued in 1981 or '82.

Note: The overdrive probably would sound better if I turned the Bass knob down when I cranked the volume, but I left both treble and bass knobs at 5 throughout the video.

  • so, are the p90's brighter sounding than humbuckers on overdrive?

  • Ah, that just depends on the type of humbuckers. I think the P-90's are brighter than Burstbucker pro's that come with the Les Paul Standard (Alnico V), but not as bright as the 490 & 498's that come with the SG Standard and Les Paul Studio. I would have to say that P-90's are right in between those two pickup types on the "bright scale". They are fairly crisp on the high end, but are pretty boomy on the low end (due to high output?). You could always lower the height of the low end.

  • isn't that SG Classic amazing?? Those P90s are just great pickups. I just picked the SG Classic at Guitar Center this memorial day weekend sale for $750 with the Deluxe Gibson gig bag out of the door.

  • It is a fun guitar for sure.

  • @prophetdude2 The neck is more like a 50s neck. I like it.

  • Can you get a tone similar to Santana's on his early days (when he used a SG with P 90's) with this guitar?

  • The neck on my sg classic is too wide for my little fingers. I like the thickness though. My Hamer Special has a much more comfy neck, but the sound doesn't have as much character as the sg.

  • stop looking at me

  • It might be something about the camera, but the neck looks insanely huge. Is that how the classic is, or is that just me?

  • Rock on! I have a 64' play it for rock ,metal, it has a tone that rips your head off....and depth. Then it cleans up really nicely as you demo'ed. Surprised people don't play them for metal..

  • i like them much more but its all about preference.

  • how would ya say the p90s are compared to humbuckers?
