As is pinned on one of the horse's side, there's a "curse" which kills once the carousel passes enough times. It's the first and the last time you hear of it during the game. Overall the segment is just an arbitrary, umm... puzzle?

That may be. But the most important thing regarding ending is enemies killed and damage accumulated.
