Since we have two fully functional newsrooms and studios; this year (2011) I was covering a funnel cloud that moved over Fort Smith from our Fayetteville Studio. However, in 2008, I was broadcasting LIVE from our Fort Smith studio as a High Precipitation Supercell moved in from the west. Widespread damage from this storm was due to wind driven golfball & baseball size hail at 70mph. It was the only time in my career I've ever felt threatened for my safety while covering weather.
In the studio, it was difficult to tell whether or not it was hail or wind because it was so loud. As I walked out of the studio and into the hallway I fully expected to see the roof fly off the studio. It's hard to imagine how loud a hail storm is unless you've been in one.
(This July is my 10th anniversary at 5NEWS. All this month on my blog I'll be posting some archive video clips from the last 10 years.)
