When making this, I was thinking about conventional family portraits, where the family are posed in an unnatural way, often in an unnatural setting (photographer's studio), and the difference between this and the snapshots that land in family photo albums.
I asked each member of my family to pose in front of the video camera for five minutes, and talk or move if they felt like it, but not if they didn't want to. I also gave them the alternative of giving me a photo of themselves if they didn't want to go on video. Four of us went on video and the other three gave me the photos.
By making the portrait in this way, I hoped to explore the process of portrait making, as well as capture something of what my family are like.
