I've been pretty lucky so far and haven't been "bitten" by a CRT.
I thik the worst for me was while working on a Predicta Princess set. I slipped and shorted out the main B+ supply with a probe tip. There was a huge crack and the tip was blow right off! It was a while before I could use a meter without my hands shaking :P

Almost forgot, when I was younger I got shocked off an anode lead in a TV I was working on, and broke the back of the CRT off with my elbow. I was ok, but the TV was a parts chassis after that... At least it was just a cheap plastic modern TV.
What do you think is one of the worst things you've had happen during a repair job?

Yikes! I'm glad you're OK. I've had a small wax/paper cap blow up in my face too. Scared the crap out of me. Luckily, I only had a small cut from a metal lead that grazed me.

Luckily I haven't had any bad experiences with the large oil caps such as the big oval shaped motor caps, but I did have a small oil cap explode on me once. It was a ceramic cased cap that was used as the "across the AC line" filter cap in a TV. I was ducked inside the back of the set making adjustments, when the thing blew up in my face and shot nasty hot oil all over me... It was a nasty green oil too. Good thing I wear glasses, or I probably would be blind :-)

LOl - good point, but don't worry - electrolytics don't contain PCBs. It's old oiled filled caps you need to avoid. Like those used on AC motors. I updated the desription of this video to include a link to a great guide on the subject.

That's pretty cool, though I was never brave enough to open any filter caps... Too afraid of finding PCB's by mistake :-)
And I agree, Orange Drops are the best. I use them whenever I can.

Thanks!

Looks good!
those skinny caps look like Nichicon PW series.. long life, high ripple.. great choice for this. i could be mistaken though.. camera shakes all over the place so you cant read the series printing even when paused.. (blurry)

@Knaeckebrotsaege I believe I used PZ series caps. I sometimes use PT series too.
