Avro Vulcan XH558 at the Waddington Air Show, 6th July 2008.

A fault developed on the number 3 engine prior to taxying. An attempt was made to repair the fault, and XH558 was started up again, only to shut down a few minutes later.

This was repeated two more times.

As I was about to leave, assuming there would be no Vulcan action, I heard her start one more time, and this video is what followed.

I originally posted this video thinking it to be an 'aborted take off', which is what those of us in the crowd believed it to be (as you can tell by the groans from the people standing nearby!). However since uploading some posters have said this was never a 'take off run', but a fast taxi instead, just so the crowd got to see something of XH558 on the move. Acording to the Vulcan Operating Team (TVOC) : "However we did demonstrate an aborted take off at full power on a wet runway".

Ive left the video here in any case.

Enjoy.

  • This is NOT an aborted take off. Or Rejected Take off. Jesus, some people are ignorant.

  • Agreed, its an aborted take off DEMONSTRATION.

  • Funds for the project always accepted.

  • What, after the VOC's chairmans pay rise this year? you must be joking.

  • Can also confirm that this was not an aborted T/O. There was a fault with the alternator on No'3 engine which was discovered during engine start up earlier in the afternoon. Unfortunately it could not be rectified in time for a flight, but the aircraft was still able to do a fast Taxi, so the crowd on Sunday also got to hear & see the Vulcan. Many people were gutted, but a fast Taxi was much appreciated & definitely better than nothing at all. Awesome!!!

  • According to The Vulcan Operating Company website, in a bulletin dated 8th July, this was an 'aborted take off demonstration'.

  • I dont give a fuck what anyone says my question? how the fuck does a "fast taxi" on the rear wheels eh?

  • Loved the video of an awesome plane! Thanks for posting. It certainly says something for the aerodynamics of the delta wing design and the pilot's skills that the nosewheel can still be kept off the ground even at such relatively slow speeds.

  • Fast taxi / Aborted take off demo. Same thing more or less.

  • The first was the day before, such a marvellous day, and i also got to touch the tin triangle, a moment i shall never forget

  • not the 1st ever!

  • Aborted take off & fast taxy are the same thing really. The pilot had no intention of taking off that afternoon as Vulcan was definitely unserviceable for flight. I listened to the pilots conversation with the control tower via my airband scanner. He clearly said several times that the Vulcan was U/S. The fast taxy was all they could do for the crowd.
