As it often happens in history, one mans dream has sparked an empire. The story that was all started by a mouse now encompasses movies, theme parks, food, television channels, magazines, books, and music.
The Disney story began in 1901 when Walt Disney was born. In 1928, a trademark was granted for Mickey Mouse. During the 1940s, Disney was chosen to animate the war series Why We Fight for the US government. On July 17, 1955, Disneyland opened. At that time, it cost only $17 million to build, and the admission price was a mere dollar.
Disney owns more than meets the eye. Their portfolio of television networks includes Lifetime, A&E, The History Channel, ESPN (including all four of the ESPN channels), the Disney Channel, SOAPnet, ABC, and the ABC Family Channel. The company also owns a majority of Us Weekly magazine and operates several other Disney-related magazines. As far as movies are concerned, Disney owns and operates Walt Disney Pictures, Touchstone Pictures, Hollywood Pictures, Miramax Films, and Pixar.
Disney owns and operates theme parks in Paris, Orlando, Anaheim, Tokyo, and Hong Kong. While visiting the parks people are surrounded by everything Mickey Mouse, including everything from t-shirts to ice cream and pasta. The vast number of Disney products has allowed for them to become the worlds top licensor.
Disney is doing more than we recognize to help the environment. They have started an environmentality campaign with Jiminy Cricket as its leader. The Disney Company is working diligently to use recycled paper as tickets and to save as many trees and forests as possible around the globe.
As we all know, Disney has reached further than just the United States. Spanning the globe with their movies, television shows, and music, Disney has definitely helped mold worldwide society with a friendly smile. It really is a small world after all.
