It must be genetic as my OES loves cubes too although he's an immediate cruncher. When he hears someone using the ice machine on our frig, he comes running as if it's a beef jerky he's about to get. Ice cubes and short hair is an OES's dream. Mine always has short hair and he is like velvet and still very handsome, as yours it as well (pretty for yours).

we call them cubies. Our old english, who passed a while ago, used to jump onto the fridge and push the ice dispenser.
also sometimes he would take an ice cube and "hide" it to save it for later. so we would have wet spots at random places around our house
