@Smartster621atzcmd60 - Of course you can put them in an ant farm, but it doesn't hurt to keep her in a test tube for starters. A queen may feel more cosy in a test tube. In the wild, she would dig a hole in wet ground and sit in it for a month or two. L. Niger queens do not need food in this period, they will burn up the muscles that powered the wings, which are now torn off.

@Smartster621atzcmd60 - L.Niger ant queens appear, where I live, July-September. You will see large swarms at times - a good time to look is if there is a hot day following a downpour during the summertime.

I was working security on nightshift on a hotel construction site alone. I saw thousands of red ants taking flight climbing a side of a well lit building followed by thousands and thousands of workers and thousands of males and thousands of virgin queens. I wish I filmed it. It was a sight to behold.

`hey iw as wondering why my ant qeen isn;t tending her eggs?.. she lays eggs at random places in the test tube she's in but she never organizes it.. is it normal?

@fyesan13 - No need to worry yet, but it may happen that the queen is laying eggs, but isn't fertile herself. In this case she may lose interest in the eggs and eat them eventually. Time will tell - that is what sadly happened to one of the queens in this movie.

@GridPB what should i do if she starts eating her eggs? would that mean she can't start a colony by her self?
fyesan13 1 year ago
@fyesan13 - If she starts eating eggs before you see them grow, she may be unable to start a colony, yes. Wait 4-5 weeks and if you can't see eggs growing, or there are fewer and fewer eggs - then it's better to let the queen out where you found her. She will die anyway if she cannot hatch workers to feed and take care of her.
