Police Chase Stolen Ambulance

Philadelphia Police arrested a suspect who led officers on a pursuit on the Schuylkill Expressway in a stolen medical transport van Wednesday morning.

Chopper 3 HD was over the westbound lanes of the Schuylkill Expressway as police chased a transport van reported stolen from a dialysis center at Broad and Champlost at about 8:30 a.m.

"I went inside, dropped off a patient, came back outside and the truck was gone," said ambulance driver Sam Riddell.

The ambulance crew quickly called 911. Police say a Lo-Jack tracking device helped them catch up with the stolen vehicle on the Schuylkill Expressway.

The suspect drove through two spike strips before coming to a stop in the left hand lanes near the exit for City Line Avenue. With guns drawn, police were able to take the suspect into custody without incident.

Initial reports say the suspect has a history of mental illness. The suspect was arraigned and is being held at the Montgomery County Correctional Facility.

The incident remains under investigation.
