Yes, and they have to think of it from the perspective of those people. If you don't have a child and all you have is a dog, you tend to put more love into them. Even if you do have a child, it still hurts.

Sorry, but your argument doesn't hold. People kill and abuse each other too even though there are VERY harsh punishments for that. Basically all studies show that having tougher sentences does not keep people from comitting crimes.

But I do agree there should be severe consequences to killing animals like that.

So I guess if it came down to either the life of your child or the life of your dog, you wouldn't be able to choose, right?

I love animals, but I wouldn't ever put them at the same worth of a human child.

@ThirdRAILKink And what is it exactly that makes your life worth anything? Are you solving murders by night and curing cancer by day? Why does the world or the universe need you or anyone else? You think you're actually doing something more than the "animals"? What is any human civilization doing that animals aren't? People have kids, go to war, consume, have more kids, more war then die. The few smart people's scientific discoveries only get used to enforce the insanity of the majority.

An animal can mean as much to someone as a child, particularly if he or she doesn't have children. You can't judge what an incident like this can do to someone. It depends upon the person. But laws do not regard animals the same way as people. The actual damage the incident did to someone is not considered, but that is really what the suit is about, isn't it? So, in effect, the courts are saying "You shouldn't love your animal that much. Its loss is not important."
