2011 was certainly a memorable year in Limerick with a host of events taking place in the City and County. Brighten up your day by taking a look back at some of the highlights of the last year in Limerick.
Limerick celebrated its largest EVER St Patrick's Day Parade in March with over 4600 participants taking part in the colourful event as the city celebrated being crowned 2011 European City of Sport.
Gardai estimated that close to 70,000 spectators watched five of Limerick's most popular and successful sporting heroes lead the 2011 parade including transatlantic rower Sean McGowan, Ireland and Munster rugby hero John Hayes; Limerick GAA star, Gary Kirby, Ireland's most capped hockey player, Eimear Cregan, and former soccer player/manager Eoin Hand.
The Limerick St. Patrick's Festival 2011 continued on Sunday 20th March 20th when over 1000 musicians, from marching bands across Limerick, Ireland, Northern Ireland and the USA, performed for the 41st Limerick International Band Competition.
The prestigious European Duathlon Championships featuring some of the world's best duathletes took place throughout the streets of Limerick last April. The major sporting event was estimated to be worth over €1m to the local economy.
An audience of over 3,100 people attended an address by His Holiness the XIV Dalai Lama entitled 'The Power of Forgiveness' at the University of Limerick on the 14th April.
Limerick hosted a spectacular party on the banks of the River Shannon over the May Bank Holiday weekend as the city hosted its annual Riverfest Summer Festival!
Ireland's largest BBQ, a FREE live open air rock concert, a water sports extravaganza, the Great Limerick Run and a huge fireworks display over the Shannon were just some of the highlights of the four day event which brought thousands of visitors to Limerick.
Thousands of rugby fans also enjoyed the festivities over the weekend as they flooded into Limerick for the Amlin Cup semi-final at Thomond Park Stadium while thousands more participated in the Great Limerick Run.
Adare Manor was the venue for the first ever Irish Festival of Speed over the August Bank holiday weekend. Marking the 75th anniversary of the 1936 Limerick Grand Prix, the festival featured the Limerick Motor Club Sprint with 80 cars racing 1.5km on an asphalt racetrack.
Some of the country's top open water swimmers took to the river Shannon on August 27th for the 2011 Thomond Swim. Almost 50 people took part in the race which spanned 1.7km.
Limerick Pride Festival ran from September 3rd to 11th and included a unique mix of events ranging from theatre to awareness, entertainment to celebration. The annual Pride Parade was the highlight of the festival and featured a colourful parade through the heart of the city.
Limerick's streets were over-run with zombies at the beginning of October for 'Outbreak', the city's first Zombie festival. Zombie flashmobs, parades, movie screenings, bands, DJs, and plenty of zombie-friendly hotels bars restaurants and nightclubs hosted unique events for the festival which was in aid of the Cliona Ring Foundation.
The Limerick Women's Mini-Marathon saw thousands of Limerick women rolling up their sleeves, lacing up their trainers and running for good causes by participating in the 2011 in September. Rosemary Ryan from Bilboa Athletics Club finished in first place.
