Mike and I built this Gramophone from only Kanji instructions. It also has a steel needle and allegedly records--I'll upload that when we figure it out!

  • Oh no! I wish I had a better answer for you, but my friend was in town from Korea and had a Japanese to Korean character pocket translator. We never actually found anything online or otherwise, but there was a lot that he wasn't sure on that we had to just guess on based on the picture instructions...

  • heh. the instructions are in kanji and the pictures aren't very helpful. i tried twice, but the grooves it created produced no sound. it seems like you have to change out some of the parts with other pieces included for recording, but its jammed now and i'm afraid of messing with it and breaking it. it does seem to only record for up to 30 seconds and the sound the actual mechanism makes is loud enough that i doubt you'd get much from it if it did record. i've just been listening to 78s...

  • Yes! It did come with a steel needle, as well. I still need to record with it, also, but have been busy beyond belief lately. More to come...

  • i feel like it plays a decent volume--but i am not familiar with comparable models nor have i ever owned an original so i'm not sure how it would compare in that sense. i enjoy playing my old 78s though and will try my hand at recording shortly!

  • yes let's DO IT! it'll have to be a short one because it can only records for up to 30 seconds! :)

  • How do you put it together? I can't find the instructions in English

  • @modmagpie why only 30 seconds?

  • did you ever record with this?! i was thinking about getting one, it says you can record on ramen noodle lids, i eat alot of those! i saw your from denver as well . sweetsauce!

  • Is it plastic or metal? You could probably get a louder sound if you used steel phonograph needles. Bamboo needles produce soft mellow tones.

  • please record something..

  • I was going to buy the same gakken kit, but it seems it plays at a very low volume...

What's your opinion about it now that you have it?
