http://AskWoodMan.com/ This is the fifth video in my complete sharpening series. In this series I will use the following tools and machines: Makita 9820 electric water stone with an after market sharpening jig, Bosch belt sander, Porter Cable belt sander, Mitutoyo combination square, General Sharpening Jig, DMT Diamond Stones, and various chisels, plane irons and scrapers.

This fifth video shows how to use a belt sander to do the preliminary grinding before taking your chisels to the diamond stones. This is a great alternative for those that do not own a Makita 9820-2 Horizontal Wet Wheel. You'll be amazed how quickly you can get your chisels back to a 25 degree bevel using this technique. The key is to have a light touch and also to keep the chisel steel from overheating. When steel overheats it can weaken and damage your tool. This will affect the hardness properties of your knife, which means it won't cut as well.

This video is just one in the series where Allan Little shows all his sharpening techniques that he has refined in the last 25 plus years to attain the sharpest chisels, plane irons and scrapers. This series will show not only how to hone and sharpen using the diamond stones, but also how to grind on the Makita 9820 course wheel as well as belt sanders. This series ends with chisels, plane irons and scraper demonstrations.

  • nice G.I. issue cold weather top. almost missed it ;;

  • @maxdecphoenix I got my first one 25 years ago when my father retired from the Army. I still have it, but a few years ago my wife found a new one online for $20 (during the summer). That has to be the most well made sweater ever. I get compliments on it all the time but only rarely does someone like you recognize it as G I top. Thanks for writing

  • @askwoodman yea, it just jumped out at me. those used to be standard issue, but the army switched over back around 2000 to a polypropylene.. thing. was thinner, and supposedly warmer, but the real reason was it was synthetic (cheaper). i didn't like it. didn't breathe at all, and the inside was a exposed towel like consistency that generated static electricity more than anything else. i found a wool one at the mcss, and never looked back. unfortunately i've managed to lose it since ets :/

  • @maxdecphoenix If you write me at my askwoodman @ gmail I will send you the link my wife found. They are new for $19.88. She is going to buy another at that price.

  • As always, very well done. Thanks!

  • @YerBuddy2 You are so nice. Thanks for watching.

  • @askwoodman thanks, but i'm not really sweating it. for every sweater i like and lose, i seem to come upon 2 or 3 that i'm not really fond of. which is to say, i have an abundance of sweaters/jackets. really can't justify spending the money on it now. maybe in a few years when i've wore out a few of these wal-mart cheapos, i'll hit up an MCSS or surplus, there is a LARGE one in a neighbor town. or just call up ranger joes in GA ;;

  • @MrAcronim This video is just grinding bevel angle quickly. Honing with a jig will be in later videos while using diamond stones where a fine honed edge will be produced. I don't mind freehanding in this situation to just get the edge prepped and I would not want my guide to touch a 60 grit belt sander belt. Thanks for watching.

  • should have got a honing guide on it!

    nice vid

  • @askwoodman thank you that truely means a lot to me
