Fayette County Commission Approves Phase 3, West Fayetteville Bypass 1 of 3

Despite strident opposition the Fayette County Commission voted 4-0 in the last meeting of the year to approve conceptual plans for the controversial Phase 3 of the West Fayetteville Bypass. The Commission stopped work on the East Bypass and switched their priorities to Phase 2 and 3 of the West Fayetteville Bypass a few years ago. They have continued to state that the Bypass was approved in the SPLOST by voters and thus their hands were tied. However, the East Fayetteville Bypass was also in the SPLOST along with other projects which are not being completed, and which were higher priorities by previous Boards.

The issue was one which many feel resulted in the ouster of one-term commissioners Jack Smith and Eric Maxwell. Their two opponents ran on the commitment to try and stop the building of the two Phases of the West Fayetteville Bypass.

Phase 3 connects to Phase 1 of the Bypass. It will route traffic from Hwy. 85 up the residential area of Harp Road, through a new leg between Harp and Redwine. The Bypass will cross over Redwine and connect to Ebenezer Church Road, then snake around into Lester Road past more residential neighborhoods to run in front of two schools.

The suggestion is that the speed limit would be increased to 45 mph along the route.

I think the West Fayetteville Bypass is a landgrab white elephant that only benefits real estate developers!
