yeah i figured out how to do it.. and you're absolutely right.. its not very stable. too bad. still, its fun and worth impressing your friends with.

In (K)Ubuntu, just go to Settings and enable Desktop effects and that's it.

GNU/Linux (Ubuntu, Debian, Mandriva etc.) + Compiz-fusion. Thats all.

I assume you have Linux Mint installed? The latest version (Elyssa) actually allows visual effects on restricted drivers without much settings. You just have to enable visual effects via the "Appearance" setting window.
However, be forewarned that visual effects might cause your OS to be unstable. That's where the tweaking is needed. Checkout the mint or ubuntu forums - they're helpful.
