Titled in reference to the new section of motorway that will cut through the south of Glasgow, crossing the Clyde and moving west through a meandering strip of industrial wasteland toward an intersection with the M8.
Huge blue steel bridges elevate the road from the city traffic below. From above, the brownfield site forges a link between the blue roads that presently encircle Glasgow. It completes the orbital route that has already cut through the centre, covering tenements and canals, creating steel and concrete boundaries.
Conversely, M74 is a sort of code-name for an unusual machine, made quickly to achieve a specific function. The ebb and flow of light that it projects onto the walls of the Glue Factory highlight one that is in a state of dereliction, and one that has been painted and made superficially fit for exhibition. The light resembles an oval, an expanding-contracting orbit which is enacted by the composite known as M74.
